Valerie Plame was a covert CIA operations officer who worked to protect America’s national security by preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Her covert status was famously leaked to the press, and her memoir, Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House, was a New York Times best-seller and adapted into a film, Fair Game, starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn. She is also the author, along with Sarah Lovett, of the spy thriller Blowback, the first in the Vanessa Pierson series. Plame has narrated and appeared in Countdown to Zero, a lauded documentary on the dangers of nuclear proliferation, and she makes public-speaking appearances around the nation on a variety of issues from weapons of mass destruction to the role of women in intelligence agencies as well as the consequences of the recent NSA/Snowden revelations. She has written for many outlets including Newsweek, CNN, The Huffington Post and The Guardian, and has degrees from Penn State University, the London School of Economics, and the College of Europe in Belgium. This international woman of mystery currently lives in New Mexico with her children and husband, former U.S. Ambassador Joe Wilson.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN CLINICAL TERMS.
“The patient” presents as a strong-willed yet private individual, who has been forced to venture out of her covert existence to find a new life for herself and her family.
WHAT QUESTION WOULD YOU MOST LIKE ANSWERED?
What does the world look like to a 13-year-old? Seriously, I need to know this. Anybody?
WHICH NATURAL GIFT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO POSSESS?
A beautiful singing voice. What a treasure that would be. Next life, I suppose.
CURSE WORD: The F-bomb, for sure; I’m a traditionalist.
COMEDIAN: My friend, Sue and Jon Stewart are neck in neck in that category.
DEADLY SIN: An occasional cigarette
WILD ANIMAL: A lion. I’m an August baby, so maybe that’s why.
MATERIAL INDULGENCE: A Kir Royale at the Café de Flore in Paris sitting next to my husband, Joe
SMELL: The inside of my son’s soccer bags after it’s been left in my car for three days
RESPONSIBILITY: Making lunches for school — so incredibly boring
SOUND: My daughter crying because someone has been unkind to her at school
EXPRESSION: “Valerie Plame is Fair Game.”
WHICH LITERARY CHARACTER DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH, AND WHY?
That’s an easy one: Vanessa Pierson. The “why” part is apparent.
WHAT DEEPLY FRUSTRATES YOU?
Having to answer the question when asked by those from other countries: “How is it that your Congress thinks shutting down your government is a viable solution to solving your country’s problems?”
IF YOU COULD SLEEP WITH ANY HISTORICAL FIGURE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
The easy answer would be my husband, Ambassador Joe Wilson, but that’s not what you’re looking for. How about James Bond? Not because he’s a spy but because he’s always a perfect gentleman and chivalry matters.
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE?
Not sure, but I truly hope we get to be with our loved ones who have gone before us. I mean, if that’s not what happens, what’s the point?
HOW DO YOU UNWIND?
With a glass of wine sitting next to my husband on our portal looking out over the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
